What this bill would do

This bill is called the "Firefighter Lithium-ion Awareness and Readiness Enhancement Act" or the "FLARE Act." It directs the Secretary of Transportation to create regulations for the safe transport of lithium-ion cells or batteries. The bill adds official definitions for "lithium-ion cell or battery" and "thermal runaway" to the Federal Fire Prevention and Control Act of 1974. It also updates the law to include suppressing fires from thermal runaway. Finally, it allows for the funding of programs to suppress these specific types of fires.
