What this bill would do

This bill is called the HBCU Empowerment and Reform Act. It changes the rules for what counts as a historically Black college or university, also known as an HBCU. Right now, the law says an HBCU must have been established before a certain date. This bill changes that date to November 8, 1965. Any school that meets all the other required criteria and was established before this new date will now be included under the definition. Our elected officials introduced this in the House of Representatives to update how these schools are recognized.
