What this bill would do
The Seton Hall Fire Victims Remembrance Act of 2026 requires the Secretary of Education to create fire suppression system standards for student dormitories and residential facilities at institutions of higher education that receive Federal funding. These standards must be developed in consultation with the Director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology and updated every 10 years. Covered institutions must assess their compliance every five years and submit these reports to the Secretary. Based on these reports, the Secretary will designate campuses as either a "Federally Recognized Fire-Safe Campus" or a "Not Federally Recognized Fire-Safe Campus." These designations and assessments will be made public on a Department of Education website.
