Potential Positive Impacts for People
-
Section 2 includes peer support services under the Medicare program for individuals diagnosed with a mental health condition or substance use disorder, which is positive because it helps people get emotional, informational, instrumental, and social and community support to assist in achieving recovery, integration in the community, self-empowerment, and self-determination.
-
Section 2 allows peer support services to be furnished by community mental health centers, rural health clinics, Federally qualified health centers, and certified community behavioral health clinics using a peer support specialist, which is positive because it expands the types of facilities and professionals available to help patients under Medicare.
Potential Negative Impacts for People
- Section 2 excludes peer support services from being covered if they are not furnished by a rural health clinic, a Federally qualified health center, a community mental health center, or a certified community behavioral health clinic, which could be seen as a burden because patients cannot receive Medicare coverage for these specific services from any other type of facility or location.
