What this bill would do
This bill, known as the "CFIUSMCA Act," directs the United States Trade Representative to prioritize North American alignment regarding foreign investment reviews. During the next joint review under the USMCA, the Trade Representative will advocate for Canada and Mexico to implement investment review frameworks similar to the U.S. framework under the Defense Production Act. The goal is to establish a mechanism for USMCA countries to coordinate on shared threats within strategically important economic sectors and critical infrastructure. The Trade Representative will also work to provide technical assistance to support these regulatory changes. This coordination aims to strengthen the collective national security interests of the three nations.
