What this bill would do
The Tax Fairness for Abuse Survivors Act amends the Internal Revenue Code of 1986. It creates a way for individuals to get relief from joint and several liability on a joint tax return if they or a family member were victims of domestic violence or abuse by the other spouse. This relief applies to tax understatements caused by the nonrequesting spouse. The law also protects the safety of the requesting spouse by limiting what information is shared with the nonrequesting spouse.
