What this bill would do
The Appraisal Industry Improvement Act changes the National Housing Act to allow State-licensed appraisers to handle appraisals for FHA-insured mortgages. It requires these appraisers to meet specific competency rules and complete verifiable education approved by the Secretary or a State agency. The bill also adds State credentialed trainee appraisers to the national registry and allows certified appraisers to use their assistance. Additionally, it allows for grants to support appraiser workforce training and recruiting. Finally, it expands the Appraisal Subcommittee to include members from the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the Rural Housing Service of the Department of Agriculture.
