What this bill would do
This bill is titled the No Woke Indoctrination of Military Kids Act. It stops schools run by the Department of Defense Education Activity from using funds to teach or promote critical race theory. The bill also bans these schools from having offices, officers, training courses, or programs related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Under Section 3, exceptions are made to keep Equal Employment Opportunity offices and programs that enforce the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. The Secretary of Defense is required to enforce these rules and can punish employees or contractors who break them with suspension or termination under Section 4. Finally, Section 4 also requires the creation of a complaint process so parents or legal guardians can report suspected violations.

Who it would affect, and how
Potential Positive Impacts for People
-
Under Section 2, the bill prohibits using funds to teach or promote critical race theory in classrooms, training, or extracurricular activities, and stops schools from requiring students to affirm concepts rooted in it. This ensures that students are not taught that any race is superior or inferior, or that individuals bear collective guilt based on race or sex.
-
Under Section 3, the bill bans the Director of the Department of Defense Education Activity from maintaining offices, chief officers, resource groups, affinity groups, or data dashboards related to diversity, equity, inclusion, or accessibility. This prevents the use of agency resources for these specific practices and programs.
-
Under Section 4, the Secretary of Defense must establish a process for parents or legal guardians to file a formal complaint regarding suspected violations of the Act. This gives parents a direct channel to hold school officials accountable if they believe the rules are being broken.
Potential Negative Impacts for People
-
Under Section 3, the bill prohibits the creation or maintenance of resource groups or affinity groups based on race, color, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, or gender identity. This removes these specific groups as a resource for students or personnel who might look to them for support.
-
Under Section 4, employees or contractors of the Department of Defense who willfully violate the provisions of the Act face disciplinary action, which may include suspension or termination. This places a direct professional burden on staff who might misinterpret or accidentally run afoul of the new restrictions.
