What this bill would do
The Merchant Marine Allies Partnership Act allows the Secretary of Transportation to authorize certain vessels to engage in coastwise trade. These vessels must be owned by, crewed by, or documented in countries listed on the Foreign Ally Shipping Registry. The Act amends various sections of title 46 of the United States Code to include these allied foreign vessels and their crews. It also establishes the Foreign Ally Shipping Registry, which is maintained by the Secretary of State. The bill provides for the potential removal of countries from this registry under specific conditions. Finally, it amends the Tariff Act of 1930 regarding repair costs for documented vessels.
