What this bill would do

This bill, titled the "Establishing Responsibility for Illegals' Crimes and Adding Deterrence and Accountability for Mayors' Sanctuary Cities Act of 2025," aims to create criminal liability for mayors of sanctuary cities. It targets instances where an undocumented immigrant commits a murder within the mayor's jurisdiction. If a mayor's sanctuary policy materially restricted cooperation with federal immigration enforcement and contributed to the failure to detain the individual, the mayor could be charged with criminal negligence resulting in manslaughter. Convicted mayors would face up to seven years in prison, fines, and mandatory removal from office. The Attorney General would hold exclusive authority to investigate and prosecute these offenses.
