What this bill would do

This bill, known as the "Stop Poisoning Florida Act," aims to regulate water discharges at Lake Okeechobee. It directs the Secretary of the Army, through the Chief of Engineers, to prohibit certain water discharges. Specifically, discharges through the S-308 and S-80 lock and dam structures must be stopped if water levels exceed specific safety thresholds. These thresholds are based on the maximum concentration of microcystins recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency for recreational waters. Testing to determine these levels can be conducted by the Secretary, another Federal agency, or the State of Florida.
