What this bill would do
This bill is known as the IHS Provider Expansion Act. It amends the Indian Health Care Improvement Act to create a new Office of Graduate Medical Education Programs within the Indian Health Service. The new office will help create pipelines for future health care professionals, oversee current residency programs, and work to establish additional residency programs. An interagency working group will also be set up to help support the office and report back to Congress regularly. The bill authorizes at least $4,000,000 for fiscal year 2027 and for each subsequent fiscal year to carry out this section.

Potential Positive Impacts for People
-
Establishing an Office of Graduate Medical Education Programs under Section 2 (Section 125(b)(1) and (2)) could help create a pipeline for future health care professionals and support the recruitment and retention of health care workers at Service facilities. This is positive because it aims to bring more medical professionals to areas that need them.
-
Creating an interagency working group under Section 2 (Section 125(c)(1)) involving other department heads to assist and plan for the long-term sustainability of the office could lead to better coordination across the government for health care education.
-
Requiring quarterly reports to Congress under Section 2 (Section 125(c)(2)) holds officials accountable by ensuring that the working group's activities are regularly disclosed to lawmakers.
Potential Negative Impacts for People
- Authorizing the appropriation of not less than $4,000,000 for fiscal year 2027 and for each subsequent fiscal year under Section 2 (Section 125(d)) means taxpayer funds will be continuously spent on this specific office, which could be seen as a financial burden.
