What this bill would do
The UNLOCK Housing Act aims to facilitate the use of Federal lands for affordable housing. It amends the Recreation and Public Purposes Act to define the development and maintenance of affordable housing for extremely low, very low, or low-income families as a public purpose. The bill requires the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development and the Secretary of the Interior to establish a Joint Task Force on Federal Land for Housing. This task force is charged with identifying suitable underutilized Federal land and streamlining land transfer processes. Additionally, the task force must promote policies to increase housing availability and evaluate costs related to the lack of affordable housing. The task force must submit annual reports to Congress and will terminate after 10 years.
