What this bill would do
This bill, known as the ``Staff Sergeant John D. Martek Purple Heart Restoration Act'', seeks to change how the Purple Heart is awarded. It would allow certain veterans who experienced a traumatic brain injury to be treated the same as those killed or wounded in action by an enemy. To qualify, the injury must have occurred while serving in the Armed Forces on or after December 7, 1941, and be caused by an act of an enemy. Veterans must have a service-connected disability for the injury or a military record proving it happened. The bill requires secretaries to create an application process for these awards.
