What this bill would do
The Fire Safe Electrical Corridors Act of 2025 allows the Secretary of Agriculture and the Secretary of the Interior to authorize the removal of trees and vegetation near electrical lines. This applies to National Forest System lands and Bureau of Land Management lands. The act permits this removal without the need for a separate timber sale. Utilities can receive permission for this through special use permits or easements. If a utility sells the removed material, they must give the proceeds to the relevant Secretary after subtracting transportation costs.
Who it would affect, and how
Potential Positive Impacts for People
-
Streamlined Vegetation Management: The bill allows for the cutting and removal of trees or vegetation near distribution or transmission lines without requiring a separate timber sale (Section 2(a)). This could make it easier for electrical utilities to maintain lines.
-
Revenue Sharing: If an electrical utility sells any of the material they remove, they are required to provide the proceeds to the Secretary concerned, minus transportation costs (Section 2(b)).
