What this bill would do
This bill, known as the "Comparison of Sustainable Transportation Act" or the "COST Act," directs specific government agencies to conduct detailed studies regarding vehicle transitions. The Comptroller General is required to analyze the costs of replacing gasoline-fueled light-duty vehicles in the Federal fleet with either electric vehicles or flex-fuel ethanol vehicles. This analysis must include the costs of necessary infrastructure deployment. Additionally, the Secretary of Energy must perform a lifecycle analysis of greenhouse gas emissions for conventional gasoline vehicles, E85 capable flex-fuel vehicles, and battery electric vehicles. The results of these analyses are to be published or submitted to Congress within one year of the act's enactment.
