What this bill would do
This bill, known as the "Bertie's Respect for National Cemeteries Act," seeks to amend title 38 of the United States Code. It aims to ensure that the prohibition against those who committed Federal or State capital crimes being interred or memorialized in National Cemetery Administration or Arlington National Cemetery is consistently enforced. The bill directs the appropriate Federal official to take reasonable actions, such as searching public records, to prevent ineligible interments. Additionally, it directs the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to disinter the remains of George E. Siple from Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. The Secretary is also required to notify the next-of-kin and relinquish the remains to them or arrange for appropriate disposition.
