What this bill would do
The NATO Edge Act aims to prevent the President of the United States from withdrawing from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It modifies existing law to ensure the U.S. remains in the alliance unless certain defense spending conditions are met by other members. The bill requires remaining NATO members who have not reached a 2 percent GDP defense spending threshold to make an explicit commitment to do so within five years. Additionally, it allows the Senate or House legal counsel to initiate or intervene in judicial proceedings to oppose withdrawal actions. These new regulations are set to expire on September 30, 2033.
