What this bill would do
This bill is known as the Safe Disposal of Opioids Act of 2026. It allows the Attorney General to award grants to covered entities to set up or keep up disposal sites for unwanted prescription medications. These grants are funded by a fee placed on the sale of active opioids. Certain patients, such as those with cancer or in hospice care, get discounts so they do not pay any amount tied to this new fee.

Potential Positive Impacts for People
- Discounts for vulnerable patients: Under Section 2 and paragraph (2), the Secretary of Health and Human Services must set up a way to discount active opioids for eligible patients at the time of purchase. This ensures that cancer patients, people in hospice care, and their representatives do not have to pay any money that comes from the new opioid fee.
Potential Negative Impacts for People
- Fees on active opioids: Under Section 2 and paragraph (3), a fee of 1 cent per 100 milligrams is placed on the sale of any active opioid by the manufacturer, producer, or importer. This could potentially increase costs for certain buyers or parts of the supply chain.
