What this bill would do

This bill is known as Garrett's Law and was introduced in the House of Representatives on September 24, 2026. The legislation amends chapter 44 of title 18, United States Code, to classify certain lethal air guns as firearms. It sets specific caliber and feet-per-second thresholds for what constitutes a lethal air gun, and also allows the Attorney General to designate weapons capable of causing death as lethal air guns through rulemaking. Paint-filled pellet weapons are excluded from this definition. The amendments take effect 850 days after the date of enactment. Additionally, the Attorney General is required to publish guidance within 365 days of enactment to help manufacturers become Federal firearms licensees.
