What this bill would do
This bill, known as the "Smart Data Center Policy Act," directs the Secretary of Commerce to conduct a study. The study focuses on the impact of placing data center sites within or near specific "covered locations." These locations include domestic military installations, rail hubs, airports, air cargo facilities, air traffic control facilities, and industrial zones. The Secretary is tasked with assessing construction costs, impacts on the energy grid, environment, and water systems, and identifying locations with necessary infrastructure. Additionally, the study should identify potential Federal Government incentives for these locations. A report of these findings must be submitted to specific House and Senate committees within 180 days.
