What this amendment would do

Mr. Markey submitted this amendment to hold our officials accountable by setting up a rule in the Senate. This rule creates a point of order against considering legislation that would cause a projected increase in household energy costs or inflation because of increased exports of United States energy.

Changes to the Bill

  • Adds a new section to title IV regarding a point of order against consumer cost spikes caused by exports.
  • Stops the Senate from considering any bill, joint resolution, motion, amendment, amendment between the Houses, or conference report that increases household energy costs or inflation due to increased United States energy exports.
  • Requires an affirmative vote of three-fifths of the chosen and sworn Members of the Senate to waive or suspend this rule.
  • Requires an affirmative vote of three-fifths of the chosen and sworn Members of the Senate to sustain an appeal of the ruling of the Chair on this point of order.
