What this amendment would do

Mr. Lee submitted amendment numbered SA 918, which was ordered to lie on the table. The purpose of this amendment is to add a spending-neutral reserve fund relating to eliminating the Department of Education to reduce the federal deficit.

The amendment aims to change the budget resolution by allowing the Chairman of the Committee on the Budget of the Senate to revise committee allocations, aggregates, and other appropriate levels. It also allows the Chairman to make adjustments to the pay-as-you-go ledger for legislation relating to eliminating the Department of Education to reduce the federal deficit by the amounts provided in such legislation.

For this change to happen, the legislation must meet specific rules set by the amendment:

  • It must not raise new revenue.

  • It must not increase the deficit over the total of fiscal years 2025 through 2029.

  • It must not increase the deficit over the total of fiscal years 2025 through 2034.
