What this amendment would do

MR. MERKLEY submitted amendment numbered SA 877 to the concurrent resolution S. Con. Res. 7.

Purpose of the Amendment

The purpose of this amendment is to hold our officials accountable by making sure that budget-related bills actually work to bring down the cost of living for everyday Americans. If our elected leaders want to pass certain budget legislation, they need to prove it will help lower inflation first.

What it Changes and Adds

  • Adds a new point of order to the Senate rules.

  • Requires the Director of the Congressional Budget Office to certify that a bill will cause a reduction in inflation before the Senate can consider it.

  • Allows this rule to be waived or suspended, or an appeal of the Chair's ruling to be sustained, only by an affirmative vote of three-fifths of the Senators.
