What this amendment would do
As folks keeping an eye on our elected officials, we want to know what they are trying to sneak into our laws. Here is the plain-English breakdown of what this amendment by Mr. Bennet is all about.
Purpose of the Amendment
The main goal here is to hold companies accountable by protecting the personal data of United States citizens. If a company has an active Federal contract, this amendment sets up a fund to make sure they cannot transfer a U.S. person's data to a server located in a foreign entity of concern. The only exception is if the person explicitly gives their permission.
What It Aims to Change or Add
The text adds a new section to the concurrent resolution that allows the Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Budget to make adjustments and revisions to certain financial levels and the pay-as-you-go ledger.
- Stops Data Transfers: It targets legislation ensuring companies with active Federal contracts cannot send U.S. data to foreign entities of concern without express permission.
- Keeps the Budget Balanced: It requires that any legislation passed for this purpose will not increase the deficit over the total of fiscal years 2025 through 2034.
