What this amendment would do

As folks keeping an eye out for the everyday people, we need to know what our elected officials are trying to do with our hard-earned money and our healthcare. Ms. Rosen submitted amendment SA 850 to the concurrent resolution for the 2025 budget.

What It Aims to Change

This amendment adds a new rule to the budget bill. Common sense tells us that keeping medicine affordable is a big deal, and this rule is designed to protect folks from paying more for their healthcare.

Here is what the amendment adds:

  • It creates a point of order in the Senate against any bill, joint resolution, motion, amendment, or conference report that would make prescription drugs more expensive.

  • It specifically protects people from facing higher costs for $35 insulin.

  • It stops actions that would increase out-of-pocket costs for Medicare beneficiaries.

  • It prevents increases in drug costs for patients on Medicaid, those with private health insurance, folks on TRICARE, and people who are uninsured.

To bypass this protective rule and pass legislation that raises these drug costs, the Senate would need a three-fifths affirmative vote of the members chosen and sworn. It also takes that same three-fifths vote to overturn a ruling by the Chair on this matter.
