What this amendment would do

Let's look at what Senator Rosen is trying to do here. She submitted an amendment, known as SA 832, which deals with the budget for the federal government covering fiscal years 2025 through 2034.

The main purpose of this amendment is to create a deficit-neutral reserve fund. This fund is specifically meant to support hiring, onboarding, and keeping workers in the federal firefighting workforce, which includes seasonal firefighters.

To put it in plain English, this amendment allows the Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Budget to make changes to financial levels and rules for future bills or amendments. These changes can only happen if the legislation focuses on supporting federal firefighters by helping to hire them, bring them on board, and keep them on the job.

There is one major rule attached to this, which we always need to watch out for to keep our elected officials accountable. Any legislation using this fund must not increase the overall deficit during the time period of fiscal years 2025 through 2034.
