What this amendment would do

Mr. Peters submitted amendment SA 815 to create a new rule in the Senate. The main purpose of this amendment is to protect the jobs, recreational opportunities, and economic impact created by commercial and recreational fisheries in the United States.

To make sure our elected officials are held accountable and take this protection seriously, the amendment adds a point of order to the Senate. This rule means it will not be in order in the Senate to consider any bill, joint resolution, motion, amendment, amendment between the Houses, or conference report that would threaten our fisheries.

If lawmakers want to push a measure that threatens these fisheries, it would take a three-fifths affirmative vote of the Senators chosen and sworn to waive the rule or to successfully appeal a ruling from the Chair.
