What this amendment would do
Mr. Merkley submitted this amendment regarding the congressional budget. We need to hold our officials accountable, and this change sets a clear rule for when Senate committees can submit their recommendations to the Budget Committee.
What It Aims to Change
- It changes the deadline for Senate committees to submit recommendations to the Committee on the Budget to not later than May 1, 2025.
- It adds a strict rule that committees cannot submit these recommendations until the Chairman of the Budget Committee certifies two specific things in the Congressional Record.
The Requirements for Certification
- The Budget Committee must first direct the Congressional Budget Office to estimate the effectiveness of the debt-reducing policies of the Department of Government Efficiency.
- This estimate must take into account the costs to taxpayers for operations and the cost of defending the Federal Government against lawsuits resulting from those actions.
- The Budget Committee must also hold a public hearing with representatives from the Congressional Budget Office to review that report before any recommendations can be submitted.
