What this amendment would do

Mr. Luján submitted amendment SA 683, which aims to add a new section to the concurrent resolution for the federal budget for fiscal year 2025 and levels through 2034.

The Purpose

The purpose of this amendment is to create a deficit-neutral reserve fund. This fund allows the Chairman of the Committee on the Budget of the Senate to make adjustments and revise allocations for legislation that focuses on specific educational and cultural goals.

What It Aims to Change or Add

  • Preserving Culture: It adds support for research relating to and preserving Native language, culture, and knowledge.
  • Supporting Institutions: It adds support for Native American-Serving Nontribal Institutions (NASNTIs), Alaska Native-Serving Institutions, and Native Hawaiian-Serving Institutions (ANNHIs).
  • Keeping the Budget Balanced: The rule for this addition is that any legislation passed for these purposes must not increase the deficit over the total period of fiscal years 2025 through 2034.
