What this amendment would do
This amendment, submitted by Mr. Cruz and Mr. Durbin, aims to add a section to bill S. 4784 to designate a specific area in Washington, District of Columbia, as "Oswaldo Paya Way".
The purpose of this change is to rename the street in front of the Embassy of Cuba to express solidarity between the people of the United States and the people of Cuba. The amendment highlights findings regarding the Cuban dictatorship and the life of Oswaldo Paya Sardinas, a political dissident and activist who worked for human rights and democratic freedoms in Cuba.
The amendment adds the following specific changes:
-
Street Designation: The area between the intersections of 16th Street, Northwest and Fuller Street, Northwest and 16th Street, Northwest and Euclid Street, Northwest will be known as "Oswaldo Paya Way".
-
Address Change: The address 2630 16th Street, Northwest, Washington, District of Columbia, will be redesignated as 2630 Oswaldo Paya Way.
-
Signage: The District of Columbia is required to build two street signs that say "Oswaldo Paya Way" to be placed above existing signs at the specified intersections, using a design similar to Metro station signs.
