What this amendment would do
This amendment, submitted by Ms. Murkowski, proposes the addition of the Chugach Alaska Land Exchange Oil Spill Recovery Act to bill S. 4784.
The purpose of this amendment is to:
- Authorize and speed up the exchange of land and interests in land between the United States and Chugach Alaska.
- Consolidate Federal ownership of both the surface and subsurface estates of Federal land and interests that were acquired under the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Habitat Protection and Acquisition Program.
To achieve this, the amendment outlines a trade where the Secretary of the Interior would convey approximately 65,374 acres of Federal exchange land (including National Forest System land and land managed by the Bureau of Land Management and National Park Service) to Chugach Alaska. In return, Chugach Alaska would convey approximately 231,000 acres of non-Federal subsurface land to the United States.
