What this amendment would do
SA 6619, submitted by Mr. Booker and Mrs. Britt, aims to add a section to the bill called the IMPROVE Initiative. This initiative directs the Director of NIH to run a research program focused on improving health outcomes.
The purpose of this addition is to:
- Advance research to reduce preventable causes of severe maternal morbidity and maternal mortality.
- Reduce health disparities in maternal health outcomes, specifically those linked to medically underserved populations.
- Improve the health of women before, during, and after pregnancy.
- Use an integrated approach to study biological, behavioral, and other factors affecting maternal morbidity and mortality to build an evidence base for specific U.S. regions.
- Target disparities by identifying biological mechanisms and risk factors for leading causes of maternal mortality and severe maternal morbidity, and by evaluating community-based interventions for women who are disproportionately affected.
This section is designed to end 5 years after the date it is enacted.
