What this amendment would do

SA 6554, submitted by Mr. Hoeven, aims to add a section to bill S. 4784 regarding a Report on Airspace Integration.

The purpose of this amendment is to address the use of unmanned aircraft systems at military installations in the United States. It recognizes that while these systems can be used for tasks like cargo delivery and perimeter security, installations also need to defend against their malicious use by detecting, identifying, and tracking threats.

To hold the Department of Defense accountable, the amendment requires the Secretary of Defense to submit a report to congressional defense committees within 180 days of the Act's enactment.

The report must include the following:

  • Responsible Parties: The officials and offices in charge of developing and deploying unmanned traffic management and airspace awareness capabilities.
  • Mandated Programs: Any programs specifically tasked with developing or validating these systems.
  • FAA Coordination: How the Department is working with the Federal Aviation Administration.
  • Integration Plans: Plans to use prototyping, operational demonstrations, test activities, and existing programs to integrate unmanned aircraft systems and counter-unmanned aircraft systems into the national airspace system.
