What this amendment would do
SA 6498, submitted by Mrs. Shaheen, Mr. Tillis, and Ms. Murkowski, aims to add a new section (SEC. 1229A) to bill S. 4784.
The purpose of this amendment is to stop the Department of Defense from using authorized funds to:
- Blockade, occupy, or annex sovereign territory of a NATO member country.
- Conduct military operations against NATO member countries.
- Assert control over NATO member countries.
These actions are prohibited unless they are authorized by the North Atlantic Council or the specific country involved.
The amendment also clarifies that it does not stop the United States from defending itself or an ally from a credible threat of an imminent armed attack or an actual armed attack.
