What this amendment would do
SA 6482, submitted by Mrs. Shaheen, aims to add a section titled Indo-Pacific Energy Resilience to bill S. 4784.
The purpose of this amendment is to authorize the Secretary of State and the Secretary of Energy to work together to:
-
Identify Indo-Pacific countries with energy vulnerabilities that might force them to increase energy imports from countries of concern, which include the Russian Federation, the People's Republic of China, the Islamic Republic of Iran, and the Democratic People's Republic of North Korea.
-
Prioritize helping these countries find cost-effective alternatives and diversify their energy sources to avoid imports from countries of concern.
-
Find ways to improve energy security, efficiency, and domestic energy capabilities within relevant Indo-Pacific countries.
-
Provide an annual report to specific congressional committees for three years detailing the actions taken, barriers to diversification, available alternatives to energy from countries of concern, and opportunities to improve regional energy resilience.
