What this amendment would do
SA 6155, submitted by Mr. Gallego, aims to add a new section (SEC. 1218) to bill S. 4784. The purpose is to stop the Department of Defense from using funds to support any agreement or commitment that allows the Government of Iran or any Iranian entity to place restrictions on commercial navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
These restrictions include:
- Tolls
- Transit fees
- Permitting requirements
The amendment clarifies that it does not stop the United States from:
- Conducting freedom of navigation operations in the Strait of Hormuz.
- Using military or diplomatic personnel to oppose or eliminate restrictions and fees claimed by any entity or country.
