What this amendment would do
This amendment aims to add a new section to the bill to create the Economy of the Future Commission within the legislative branch.
The purpose of this commission is to create agreed-upon legislative recommendations to handle economic changes caused by the use of artificial intelligence.
Key goals and additions include:
- Legislative Recommendations: The commission will develop suggestions for laws regarding workforce development, education (from K-12 through higher education), social safety nets, and taxation policy.
- Specific Areas of Study: The group will evaluate things like Federal AI research strategies, supply chain challenges for robotics, energy demands for data centers, and transportation safety for autonomous vehicles.
- Reporting Requirements: The commission must produce two reports:
- An interim report including employment and Federal revenue estimates for 5 and 10 years into the future.
- A final report with recommendations on reskilling employees, unemployment insurance, and keeping the U.S. competitive in technology and manufacturing.
- Structure and Funding: The commission will consist of 12 members appointed by congressional leaders and 4 nonvoting members appointed by the President. It is authorized to receive $5,250,000 for fiscal year 2027.
