What this amendment would do
Here is the straight talk on what this amendment is all about. Senator Merkley put forward SA 610 to keep our elected officials accountable when it comes to the people we rely on to fight wildfires.
- The purpose of the amendment is to stop the Federal Government from cutting the number of wildland firefighters.
- It aims to add a point of order in the Senate against any bill, joint resolution, motion, amendment, or conference report that decreases the number of seasonal or permanent wildland firefighters employed by the Federal Government, including through a workforce reduction.
- To bypass this rule and allow a vote on a bill that cuts firefighter numbers, it would take a three-fifths affirmative vote of the Senators chosen and sworn.
