What this amendment would do
SA 6071, submitted by Mr. Curtis, aims to add a new section to bill S. 4784 to create the Electrical Grid Resilience Pilot Program on Navy Installations.
The purpose of this amendment is to have the Secretary of the Navy replace wood utility poles with modular composite utility poles at specific Navy installations.
- The Secretary must choose locations that have had pole failures and outages caused by wildfires, wind over 120 miles per hour, or excessive ice loading.
- The Secretary may also consider factors like wildlife interference and corruption, or environmental moisture from wetlands and swamps.
The amendment authorizes $10,000,000 for the program. The Secretary must report the performance of these poles to the congressional defense committees one year after installation. This program is set to end five years after the Act is enacted.
