What this amendment would do

SA 6056, submitted by Mr. Scott of South Carolina, aims to add a new section to bill S. 4784 regarding a statement of policy on the repeal of the sunset of the Iran Sanctions Act of 1996.

The purpose of this amendment is to establish that it is the policy of the United States to repeal the sunset provision in the Iran Sanctions Act of 1996.

The amendment provides the following findings to support this policy:

  • The Iran Sanctions Act of 1996 requires sanctions regarding Iran's support for terrorism, including the Revolutionary Guards Corps, and its illicit weapons programs, including ballistic missile development and conventional weapons.

  • The Government of Iran is providing financial support and weapons to terrorist proxies in the Middle East, threatening United States partners and allies like Israel, and has obtained destabilizing conventional weapons systems from other malign actors and the Russian Federation.
