What this amendment would do

SA 6022, submitted by Mr. Schmitt, aims to add a new section to bill S. 4784. This addition requires the Secretary of Defense, working with the Secretary of State, to create and submit a strategy to improve security cooperation between the United States and New Zealand.

The purpose of this strategy is to:

  • Strengthen the defense relationship between the two countries.
  • Improve military interoperability and support stability and security in the Indo-Pacific region.
  • Grow cooperation regarding advanced defense capabilities.
  • Find specific actions to handle shared security challenges in the Antarctic and Pacific regions.

The strategy must include assessments on intelligence sharing, current defense cooperation, a roadmap for military interoperability, and opportunities for defense industrial base cooperation. It also requires an assessment of defense and logistics cooperation in the Southern Ocean and Antarctica.

Finally, the amendment requires a list of specific actions, timelines, and resource needs to make the strategy work. The Secretary of Defense must provide a briefing to congressional defense committees within 30 days after submitting the strategy.
