What this amendment would do
Here is the rundown on what this amendment is all about, using plain common sense. Senator Merkley put forward SA 601 to make sure our elected officials are held accountable when it comes to the taxes collected from the people.
-
The purpose of the amendment is to add a new point of order in the Senate against legislation that gives tax breaks to fossil fuel companies.
-
It aims to stop the Senate from considering any bill, joint resolution, motion, amendment, amendment between the Houses, or conference report that would create new or expand existing tax breaks for fossil fuel companies.
-
If someone tries to pass these tax breaks anyway, it takes a three-fifths vote of the Senators chosen and sworn to waive the rule or to win an appeal against the Chair's ruling.
