What this amendment would do

The purpose of SA 6005 is to establish the Gunnison Outdoor Resources Protection section. It aims to add new land designations and protections for specific federal lands located primarily in Gunnison County, Colorado.

The amendment seeks to add the following to the bill:

  • Land Designations: It creates several new protected areas, including Special Management Areas, Wildlife Conservation Areas, Protection Areas, Recreation Management Areas, and the Rocky Mountain Scientific Research and Education Area.
  • Wilderness Expansions: It designates new wilderness areas (such as Matchless, East Cement, and Star Peak) and adds acreage to existing ones like the West Elk and Uncompahgre wilderness.
  • Resource Restrictions: It withdraws certain lands from mineral leasing for oil and gas in Delta County and prohibits commercial timber harvesting in covered areas.
  • Use Regulations: It sets specific rules for the use of off-highway vehicles, bicycles, and over-snow vehicles, generally limiting them to existing designated roads and trails.
  • Tribal Land: It directs the Secretary of the Interior to take approximately 19,080 acres of land into trust for the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, with a specific restriction that this land cannot be used for gaming activities.
  • Environmental Restoration: It mandates the decommissioning of temporary roads and requires that vegetation management projects be collaboratively developed to restore ecological integrity.
