What this amendment would do
SA 6000, submitted by Ms. Hirono, aims to add a section to bill S. 4784 regarding the sense of Congress relating to Indian Tribes and Native Hawaiians.
The purpose of this amendment is to state that the United States, including the Trump Administration, should uphold Federal obligations and trust and treaty responsibilities to Native Hawaiian communities and Indian Tribes.
The amendment specifies that this should be done by:
- Upholding obligations and rights under Federal law, including reserved and treaty rights.
- Supporting the efforts of Native communities for self-determination.
- Fulfilling obligations found in Executive orders and presidential memoranda.
- Performing meaningful engagement and outreach with Native Hawaiians and early, robust government-to-government consultation with Indian Tribes.
