What this amendment would do
SA 5985, submitted by Mr. Cruz, aims to add a new section to bill S. 4784. Its purpose is to require the Secretary of State and the Secretary of Defense to allow the display of the flag of Taiwan and related military unit emblems or insignia.
This permission applies to members of the Armed Forces and representatives from Taiwan or the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO) for the following purposes:
- Wearing official uniforms.
- Conducting ceremonies or functions.
- Appearing on Department of Defense and Department of State social media accounts that promote engagements with Taiwan.
The amendment specifies that it should not be seen as a change to the One China Policy of the United States, which is guided by the Six Assurances, the three United States-People's Republic of China Joint Communiques, and the Taiwan Relations Act.
