What this amendment would do
SA 5980, submitted by Mr. Schiff, aims to add new rules regarding agreements with the President to bill S. 4784.
The purpose of this amendment is to change how certain tax matters are handled:
-
It removes the authority of the Attorney General and the Department of Justice to handle offers of compromise or settlement agreements for tax returns filed by the President or their immediate family during the President's term in office.
-
It allows the period for assessment or court proceedings to collect these taxes to begin any time before 3 years after the President's term in office ends.
-
These changes apply to any case or action starting on or after January 20, 2025.
