What this amendment would do

SA 5979, submitted by Ms. Smith and Mrs. Blackburn, aims to add a new section to title VII of bill S. 4784.

The purpose of this amendment is to require the following:

  • The Secretary of Veterans Affairs, consulting with the Secretary of Defense, must provide a briefing and a public report within 18 months of the Act's enactment. This report must detail how intimate partner violence and military sexual trauma affect the risk of suicide and suicidal ideation for veterans and members of the Armed Forces.

  • Within one year after that report is published, the Secretary of Defense and the Secretary of Veterans Affairs must include those findings as risk factors for suicidal ideation and suicide in the Department of Defense/Department of Veterans Affairs Clinical Practice Guidelines for Assessment and Management of Patients At Risk For Suicide, or similar successor guidelines.
