What this amendment would do

As folks working for you in Congress, we need to keep a close eye on how our government handles your private information. Mr. Merkley submitted SA 591, which is an amendment about setting up a deficit-neutral reserve fund.

The main purpose of this change is to protect your sensitive taxpayer information that is held by executive agencies. If we pass laws to do this job, this amendment gives the Chairman of the Committee on the Budget of the Senate the power to change financial levels and budgets.

What it aims to change or add

  • It adds a new section to the end of title III of the budget resolution.

  • It creates room in the budget for legislation that protects taxpayer information from people who shouldn't be seeing it.

  • It specifically targets people who are not Federal Government employees, special Government employees, and folks who lack proper security clearances, haven't passed background checks, or haven't taken required information security training.

  • It makes sure any new laws written for this purpose will not increase the national deficit between fiscal years 2025 and 2034.
