What this amendment would do
The proposed amendment is called the Nitazene Control Act. Its purpose is to protect public health and streamline enforcement by addressing the proliferation of new analogs of 2-benzylbenzimidazole opioids, which are synthetic opioids that can be more potent than fentanyl.
This amendment aims to add a section to bill S. 4784 that makes the following changes:
-
Permanent Scheduling: It amends the Controlled Substances Act to permanently classify 2-benzylbenzimidazole opioids (nitazenes) under Schedule I. This includes substances structurally related to 2-benzylbenzimidazole, substances with agonist activity at the mu-opioid receptor, and a specific list of compounds such as Etonitazene and Protonitazene.
-
Status Update: Any substances in this class that were previously only temporarily scheduled will now be considered permanently scheduled.
-
Research Compliance: It clarifies that any new research using these opioids must follow proper registration and scheduling compliance.
